How to Make Delicious Coffee with an AeroPress 

Make Delicious Coffee with an AeroPress

Making AeroPress coffee doesn’t require expertise, but it requires the right technique that even beginners can master. I’ve been making this joe for more than five years, and here’s the recipe that always works well for me.

Things You Need 

  • AeroPress 
  • AeroPress filters 
  • Kettle 
  • AeroPress funnel 
  • AeroPress coffee beans 
  • Grinder
  • Digital scale 
  • Stirring tool 
  • A coffee mug 

Step 1: Bring the Water to Boiling Point

Take 7oz of water in a kettle and keep it on a stovetop. You can even use an electric kettle if you don’t want the hassles of using a stovetop. Let the water boil, meanwhile perform the following steps. 

Step 2: Weigh the Beans and Grind Them 

Weigh the Beans and Grind

Using the right amount of coffee beans is essential to brewing delicious coffee. For an AeroPress coffee, you should take 15-18 grams of beans. Add these beans to a grinder, and set it on a finer setting.

The coarseness of the grounds should be finer than sea salt. 

Step 3: Prepare the AeroPress and Warm It Properly 

Take the cap of the AeroPress, and insert a paper filter inside it. If you don’t have these filters, buy a new set and change them with every brewing cycle. 

Now pour some hot water and wet the filter and the cap. The hot water eliminates the paper-like taste and heats the brewer to keep the coffee warm for longer. 

Pour the water slowly to wet the filter properly. 

Step 4: Assemble the AeroPress

Assemble the brewer, and ensure the entire assembly is dry. The residual moisture can ruin the flavor, so don’t compromise with the device’s seal. 

Step 5: Place it On the Scale 

Take a weighing scale, and place the AeroPress assembly on it. The numbers on the press should appear upside-down. Now add grounds to the press, and be careful about spills. 

Add water, twice as the weight of the beans. If you have used 15 grams of beans, add 30 grams of water. The temperature of the water should be around 200 degrees F.

Step 6: Let the Coffee Saturate 

Set a timer, and let the coffee saturate evenly for about 30 seconds. Tamp it slightly with a stirring tool such as a butter knife and let it sit for 30 more seconds.

Now pour the remaining water and fill the chamber.

Step 7: Stir the Grounds 

After about a minute, stir the grounds, and fasten the cap. Ensure that the cap is tight so that the pressure built up inside the press cannot leak. Flip the assembly, and remove it from the scale.

Now place the AeroPress on a vessel, and put your hand on the piston. You’ll experience good resistance, so get ready to apply some real strength.

If pushing the piston feels too easy, the grinds are finer, and if the piston asks for more pressure, then the grounds are coarser. Keep pushing the piston, and you’ll see coffee dripping inside the vessel.

When you hear a hissing sound, stop applying pressure, as there is no water inside the chamber.

Step 8: Unscrew the Cap and Take the Puck Out 

Remove the cap and push the puck, so it comes out of the AeroPress. The coffee is ready for serving, and you can use it to make other delectable drinks. 

Step 9: Clean and Store 

Clean the AeroPress after every use, and store it once it gets dry. 

Best Brewing Techniques to Use with an AeroPress 

The recipe that I’ve shared above is perfect for brewing great-tasting coffee with an AeroPress. But these tips from baristas will take the taste and richness to another level.

Use Microwave Instead of a Stovetop 

With a microwave, you can achieve the right water temperature that’s great for brewing coffee with an AeroPress. The temperature should be 175-degree F. Using a thermometer or a kettle will take more time and will be a tough task.

Rinse the Filter Carefully 

Rinsing the filter is a part of brewing coffee. However, some people rinse the filter so much that it gets damp and unfit for brewing. The filter used with an AeroPress has tiny holes, so rinse them carefully.

Some filter manufacturers even recommend using the filters without rinsing. Furthermore, the filters are reusable, and you can use a filter for multiple brewing cycles.

Ensure that the paper filter is entirely dry before you use it for the next brewing cycle.

Use Back Pressure to Stop the Drip

When you add hot water to the AeroPress chamber, it will start dripping. And to stop the water from dripping, use backpressure. Pull the piston gently, and let the coffee decant before pushing the piston.

Always Use Filtered Water for Brewing 

As there is no water filter inside an AeroPress, so you should use filtered water only. The coffee made with filtered water results in smooth and rich coffee that you will love.

Don’t Take Grind Size  for Granted

Use a good automatic burr grinder to grind the beans properly. If the beans for the AeroPress are too coarse, then the water will not pass through them. Furthermore, if the grind is too fine, the water will slide through the AeroPress, and the coffee will be watery. 

Never Fill the Chamber to the Top 

Filling the chamber to the top will result in overflowing when you place the piston. Use less water so that the coffee becomes more concentrated and enjoyable. 

Don’t Rush 

Don’t rush when pressing the piston, as it can result in watery coffee. Be gentle so that you can extract the entire coffee from the beans. You can even stop pressing the piston in the middle to brew properly.
