De’Longhi Dedica Espresso Machine Review

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M Review: The Pros and Cons

This espresso machine from De’Longhi is sleek, premium, and ideal for home use. From a big portafilter to an adjustable frothing wand, the machine has advanced hardware to brew delicious coffee.

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M

Check out what’s good and bad about this coffee brewer.

The Pros

Sleek and Compact

Usually, coffee makers from De’Longhi are popular for their bulky designs. But this is not the case with Dedica. It’s a sleek coffee machine with a smaller footprint.

The dimensions of the machine are 5.9” (W) x 13” (D) x 12” (H), and you can store it anywhere inside the kitchen.

Operates at High Pressure

The coffee machine comes equipped with a 15-bar pressure system that enhances the performance and helps in better extraction. De’Longhi Dedica quickly reaches the highest pressure and enables you to brew espresso quickly.

Heats Up Water Quickly

The heating element fitted inside this DeLonghi coffee maker is efficient and raises the temperature quickly. You can brew coffee quickly within 1-2 minutes, depending on the type of coffee you are looking to brew.

The heating element even improves the steam wand’s performance, and you can froth milk quickly to make a good cappuccino.

Bigger Water Level Indicator

The water level indicator is big and clear. You can have a glance to determine how much water is there. It eliminates the hassles of opening the lid over and over to check the water level.

Shuts Off Automatically

The coffee maker shuts off automatically after brewing coffee. There is no need to worry, even if you forget to turn off the coffee brewer. De’Longhi Dedica takes around 20 minutes to turn off if left unused for some time.

Heats the Cup

The amazing espresso coffee maker delivers you barista-level coffee. It warms the cup and makes it ready for pouring freshly brewed coffee.

The Cons

No Built-in Grinder

The coffee machine lacks a grinder, so you need to purchase one separately. It’s a fairly expensive machine, so I was expecting an integrated burr grinder.

The Tamper is Flimsy

You get a plastic tamper in the box, which is great. But it is flimsy and is not very durable. If you tamp coffee vigorously, the tamper can break easily.

The Water Reservoir Could’ve Been Bigger

The water tank is small. You can brew a few cups only, and then the tank requires you to refill it again. It’s great for small families or bachelors with one or two coffee makers in the house.

The Stainless Steel Steam Wand is Average

The steam milk frothing wand is average but not exceptional. It works pretty well, but if you are looking to brew multiple milk-containing drinks, this wand is not the best.

No Programmability

You cannot set a brewing program with DeLonghi Dedica, and that’s a bit disappointing.

De’Longhi Dedica Review: The Key Features

De’Longhi Dedica Espresso Controls

This superb espresso machine from De’Longhi is great for brewing delicious coffee. The machine looks similar to what you see in the baristas.

Here are some features that make it a special brewer under $500.

An Optimal Pressure System

Inside the coffee maker, there is a 15-bar pressure system that’s great for brewing espresso. As per expert baristas, 9-bar pressure is enough to extract the flavor from the grounds, but Dedica uses 15-bar pressure.

This coffee brewer is far better than other entry-level espresso machines, and you will experience it when making coffee with it.

What’s great about the pressure system is that it operates quietly. DeLonghi Dedica is not a noisy brewer.

A Bigger Portafilter

De’Longhi Dedica Bigger Portafilter

You get a bigger stainless-steel portafilter with Dedica. The portafilter is excellent for brewing great-tasting coffee. Furthermore, it has an insulated handle that doesn’t get hot at all.

You get multiple portafilter baskets inside the box to brew different types of grounds with varying coarseness. De’Longhi even ships a scoop inside the box, so you can add grounds to the portafilter without any hassles.

It Uses ThermoBlock Technology

Several premium espresso-making machines from DeLonghi use Thermoblock technology. This advanced technology helps the machine in achieving the optimal temperature quickly within 40 seconds.

It’s a smart coffee machine that prevents overheating the grounds, and you get perfect coffee every time you brew it with DeLonghi Dedica.

Built-in Cup Warming Plate

On the top of the coffee maker, you will see a big cup warming plate. The sole purpose of this plate is to preheat the cups and make them ready for pouring espresso or any other coffee that you brew with it.

The thing I loved about the cup warming plate is its size. You can place several cups on it, as there is no burr grinder in this machine.

Brews Two Shots

With De’Longhi Dedica, you can brew one or two shots of espresso. There are two dedicated buttons available on the control panel, and you can switch between one and two shots as per your requirements.

When you tap a button, the indicator starts glowing, so you can be sure about the coffee’s strength you have selected. There’s no separate brew button available in this coffee maker, which makes brewing easier.

Removable Drip Tray

The Dedica EC685.M comes with a removable drip tray that simplifies the cleaning task. The drip tray is big and minimizes spills, but you need to clean it after a few brewing sessions.

Removing the tray is pretty easy, but hold and pull it gently for thorough cleaning.

Rapid Cappuccino System

The Rapid Cappuccino System eliminates the need to wait between the cups. You can keep brewing delicious coffee continuously without taking a pause, and that’s why Dedica is a superb espresso maker.

You can even brew dual shots continuously, but make sure to top up the water tank before it gets empty.

Three-in-one Filter Holder

The three-in-one filter holder helps the machine extract every drop of delicious coffee from the grounds. You won’t see any granules in the brewed coffee, and it’s as rich and smooth as you like it.

Optional Water Filter

You can use the water filter if your area has hard water. For soft/purified water, there is no need to use the filter. You will find the optional water filter inside the box.

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M: Other Important Aspects

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M Other Aspects

In this section, you will find how the coffee maker performs, how the design, and the time it takes to brew joe. Furthermore, I’ve covered the requirements of the cleaning process to help you make an informed decision.

The Design

De’Longhi Dedica steals the show with its impressive design. The coffee maker is sleek, compact, and fits almost anywhere. It’s an entirely stainless-steel machine that promises durability.

Furthermore, the combination of matt black and steel looks really cool, making it a beautiful coffee machine.

The sophisticated chassis makes it even more impressive, and the protruding steam wand makes it convenient to froth the milk. On the backside, there is a big water reservoir with a transparent window.

Not only it does make the coffee maker look good, but it makes it easier for you to determine how much water is there for brewing.

I’m impressed with the design, and the coffee brewer catches the attention sitting on your kitchen counter.

Ease of Use

Coming to the ease of use, De’Longhi Dedica scores 10/10. The machine has a simple interface, and even beginners can operate it without much effort.

To make coffee with Dedica EC685.M, all you need to do is add the coffee grounds to the portafilter (the stainless-steel pot) and press the single or double shot button.

Coffee Pouring

Furthermore, frothing milk is a cakewalk and requires a minute or two. As the coffee brewer has single heating, so the wand and dripper don’t work simultaneously.

The best thing about the frothing wand is that it’s adjustable and helps you get either frothy steam milk or hot steamed milk.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning the coffee maker is pretty easy once you establish a routine. You can remove the steam wand and the silicone parts to rinse them properly.

However, a few users didn’t have a great time descaling it. Well, descaling the coffee maker is straightforward. The coffee machine gives you an alert when it needs descaling, and you can remove the water tank to remove the scales.

Cleaning the machine properly will enhance its lifespan, and you can run it without any issues to brew delicious espresso and cappuccino.

How Does the Coffee Taste with De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M?

The flavor, richness, and smoothness of the coffee brewed with DeLonghi Dedica depend on several factors. With this brewer, you can prepare delicious coffee without much effort.

The machine uses a 15-bar pump, and that’s why the coffee tastes good. Furthermore, the heat up is less than 40 seconds, the brewer takes less time to make espresso.

My neighbor owns this machine, so I got several chances to use it for brewing. You can adjust the caffeine dose by brewing single and double shots with this joe maker.

The double shot has the right amount of caffeine you need to start your day, whereas the single shot is perfect for an evening.

With De’Longhi Dedica, there’s no need to worry about the flavor. The only thing you need to worry about is grinding the beans and tamping them properly.

Even in the initial tries, I was able to make great-tasting espresso, so if you are looking for an easy-to-use machine, you can go for De’Longhi Dedica.

Who Should Buy De’Longhi Dedica and Who Shouldn’t?

Designed to produce barista-level coffee, this sleek and attractive coffee maker by De’Longhi makes a smart choice. But it isn’t the best coffee maker for everyone out there.

Who Should Buy It?

Folks that are looking for a proper espresso machine should go for this machine. This coffee maker will keep you fueled with high-quality drinks, whether you are a single-shot lover or a dual-shot espresso fan.

Furthermore, it is great for people that aren’t looking for any advanced machines with not so easy-to-use features. Dedica is a simple machine with a straightforward interface to help you brew coffee.

Who Should Avoid It?

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M is not a good coffee maker if you don’t own a dedicated grinder. Moreover, it is not programmable, so if you are looking to wake up to freshly brewed coffee, this is not the brewer you should buy.

Lastly, if you have a huge family of coffee drinkers, you can consider a different De’Longhi espresso machine like DeLonghi BCO430BM All-in-One Combination Maker & Espresso Machine

De’Longhi Dedica EC685.M: What’s Inside the Box

De’Longhi Dedica comes with almost everything inside the box that you need to brew espresso and other beverages. However, there are a few things missing, and I have mentioned them in the accessories section.

  • An espresso machine (the main unit)
  • Descaling solution
  • A stainless-steel portafilter with several baskets
  • A plastic tamper with a built-in scoop
  • User manual and warranty card

The filters come pre-fitted inside the machine, so you won’t find them inside the box.

Accessories to Buy with De’Longhi Dedica Coffee Maker?

So, every feature of this coffee maker sounds good to you, and you are ready to buy it? Before you press the Buy Now button and add the machine to the shopping cart, it’s essential to take a look at the accessories you need.

A Tamper

Wait, De’Longhi Dedica comes with a plastic tamper, so why do I need to buy it separately! I know you are thinking this! Well, the tamper that comes inside the box is flimsy and is not very sturdy.

You should buy a stainless-steel tamper because dosing the coffee properly is essential to enhance its flavor. I saw my neighbor using DeLonghi DLSC058 Coffee Tamper, and it’s an amazing tamper.

The big and robust handle makes it easier to dose the coffee, and the best part is that it doesn’t break easily.

A Burr Grinder

You know why you need a burr grinder with this coffee maker. I recommend Delonghi KG49 Coffee Grinder. It’s a fantastic grinder with an adjustable option and works well with the De’Longhi Dedica coffee brewer.

A Knock Box

After brewing the coffee, you need a knock box to empty the portafilter. There’s nothing better than a De’Longhi Knock Box. It’s a stainless-steel knock box that’s highly durable and is easy to clean.

A Milk Pitcher

De’Longhi doesn’t ship a pitcher with this coffee maker, so you should buy it separately as well. Check out this DeLonghi Stainless Steel Milk Frothing Pitcher. It’s a high-quality pitcher with a long spout for making delicious cappuccinos and lattes.
